As of September 12, 2023, Ethiopian expatriates worldwide are rejoicing in the commencement of the 2016 Ethiopian New Year. This festive occasion is not limited to those living abroad; Ethiopians within the nation are also embracing the New Year on this exact date. Across the global map, Ethiopian communities and their well-wishers are congregating at Ethiopian Embassies and other venues to commemorate this event.
In countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Djibouti, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Japan, South Sudan, and many more, Ethiopian diaspora communities are observing the arrival of the 2016 Ethiopian New Year through diverse and vibrant celebrations. Diplomatic representatives, including Ethiopian Ambassadors, have taken this opportunity to extend their heartfelt New Year greetings to all Ethiopians. They have also issued a call for Ethiopian expatriates to persist in their unwavering support for the multifaceted development initiatives of their homeland.
It's noteworthy that Ethiopia operates on a unique calendar system comprising 13 months. The first 12 months consist of 30 days each, while the 13th month, known as Pagumen, includes five days, which expands to six during leap years. The commencement of the New Year is synonymous with the culmination of Ethiopia's primary rainy season, a time when the countryside is transformed into a sea of gold as daisies, often referred to as "Adey Abeba," bloom across rural fields.
