Dancing before the battle: 200 South African Fire fighters land in Canada to lend a hand in fighting

In a delightful twist of fate, the skies above Edmonton, Canada, were filled with a symphony of song and dance as a troupe of 200 South African firefighters descended upon the city. With hearts afire and determination ablaze, these extraordinary men and women had traveled across continents to lend a helping hand in the battle against the relentless wildfires that have plagued the province of Alberta.

This need for aid came after Alberta has witness more than 550 devastating wildfires this season, with the assistance from SA offered as part of an existing Memorandum of Understanding between Canada and South Africa which was signed in 2019. This will be the fifth deployment since the agreement came into being.

The arrival of the South African firefighters, accompanied by 15 experienced managers from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment’s Working on Fire Programme, marks a turning point in this arduous battle. With their specialized skills and unwavering commitment, they join forces with their Canadian counterparts, working tirelessly to tame the unruly flames that threaten both lives and ecosystems.

Working on Fire (WoF) is a government-funded, job-creation program focusing on Integrated Fire Management in South Africa. WoF fire fighters are recruited from marginalised communities and trained in fire awareness and education, prevention and fire suppression skills. 

These young men and women form veld and forest fire fighting ground crews, stationed at bases around the country to help stop the scourge of wildfire which costs the South African economy millions of dollars annually.

For the South African firefighters, this journey represents more than just a professional duty. It is a profound testament to their bravery, unity, and compassion.

Leaving behind their families and loved ones, they embark on an extraordinary mission, driven by a shared sense of purpose and a deep connection to the global community. As they gather at the airport in Edmonton, their voices rise in harmonious song, their bodies sway in a dance of solidarity.
